“Do you have this in red?” is one of the most common questions a fashion brand gets asked. On Instagram, in DMs, on WhatsApp. A question that should never need to be asked - because the answer should be right there on the store, instant and obvious.
Most Shopify stores can't do this cleanly. You can filter by color using a basic tag filter, but it's clunky, it looks generic, and it does not match the shopping experience a fashion brand deserves.
So I built something better. A fully custom Shop by Color feature - a visual color wheel where a customer clicks any shade and instantly sees every product available in that color. No searching, no scrolling through pages, no DMing the brand. One click. Done.

Custom Shop by Color feature built on Shopify
Why Color Is the Most Underserved Feature in Fashion Shopify Stores - A Shopify Developer's Take
Color is one of the first filters a customer applies when they shop for fashion. Before style, before price range, before occasion - they already know what color they're in the mood for. Sage green. Rust orange. Classic navy. Deep maroon.
If your Shopify store can't serve that intent in one interaction, you are making them work. And when shopping becomes work, people leave. They go somewhere else - often a brand with a worse product but a smoother store.
Standard Shopify themes give you a basic tag filter. It works, technically. But it looks like every other store and it does not create a moment - the kind of experience that makes a customer feel like this brand actually thought about how they shop.
“Color is one of the first filters a customer applies. If your store can't serve that intent in one interaction, you're making them work. And when shopping becomes work, people leave.”
What I Built - and How It Works
The feature is a visual color wheel, custom designed to match the brand's identity. Every color segment on the wheel represents an actual color available in the store's inventory.
A customer clicks on any segment - say Maroon. Instantly, below the wheel, every product available in Maroon appears. The color name shows at the centre. The product count shows. They can browse by category - Dresses, Sets, T-Shirts - and the results update live.
No page reload. No separate filter page. No app running in the background. The whole thing is built with custom Shopify Liquid and Alpine.js - lightweight, fast, and fully integrated into the store.
The Customer Experience
Customer lands on the Shop by Color section and sees the full color wheel
They click any color - say Rust Orange or Maroon or Sage Green
Every product in that color loads instantly below the wheel
They can filter further by category - Dresses, Sets, Tops
They find what they want in seconds and go straight to checkout
Why Custom Shopify Development Beats a Plugin Every Time
Most Shopify store owners reach for an app when they want a feature like this. There are color filter apps on the Shopify App Store. They work. But they come with trade-offs most brands don't think about until later.
No monthly app cost
Built into the store - zero ongoing subscription fees
Fully on-brand
Color wheel designed to match your brand identity exactly
Faster loading
No third-party script loading in the background slowing the page
You own it
It lives in your theme - not dependent on an app staying alive
A plugin gives you a generic feature that looks like every other store using the same plugin. A custom build gives you a feature that looks and feels like yours - because it was designed and coded specifically for your brand.
The Bigger Point - Custom Shopify Features That Match How Customers Actually Shop
This is what separates a custom Shopify store from a themed one. A theme gives you the features someone else decided were standard. A custom build gives you features designed around how your specific customers think and shop.
For a fashion or D2C brand, the store is not just a product catalogue. It is the brand experience. Every interaction - how collections are browsed, how products are discovered, how customers move from interest to purchase - should feel intentional and effortless.
Shop by Color is one feature. But it represents a way of thinking about Shopify development - starting from how the customer shops, then building the feature that serves that behaviour. That is how custom stores convert better than themed ones.
Built With
Custom Code, Zero Plugins
Shopify Liquid - Native templating - color data pulled directly from product metafields
Alpine.js - Lightweight JS for live filtering - no React, no jQuery overhead
Tailwind CSS - Custom styled to match the brand's design system exactly
Does Your Fashion Store Need This?
You sell products across multiple colors and customers regularly ask which colors are available
Your store is getting traffic but customers are not browsing deep - they find one product and leave
You get DMs asking about availability in specific colors - those are customers your store is failing
Your current color filter is a basic tag dropdown that looks nothing like your brand
You want your store to feel like a premium fashion destination, not a generic Shopify build
If any of these feel familiar, this is exactly the kind of feature your store needs. And it is not something you need to wait on - it can be built and live in days, not months.
